Abstract: Metropolitan development and the new urban morphology can be conceived as the progressive differentiation of four main populations that impinge on today cities. Traditionally, the night population and the day population
(i.e. the inhabitants and the workforce respectively) coincided both spatially and sociologically. The second-generation metropolis, however, was characterised by the incoming question of commuting, signalling the growing gap between those who actually
lived in the city and those who merely worked there. Inhabitants and commuters are flanked by yet a third group of people who flow into the city to make use of its public and private services, the city users. This is a temporary population with needs and
habits that differ greatly from those of the daytime population are complemented by a fourth one, composed of individuals who converge on the city for reasons of business and trade. The traditional tools of sociological inquiry make no account for the
